Built for a Growing Corridor
A fire station in the middle of a developing technology park has to do more than provide a home for firefighters and apparatus. It has to bring much of its own supporting infrastructure with it. Located near Interstate 80 in eastern Washoe County, this new facility gives Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District a strategically positioned resource designed around the needs of a growing corridor and the communities beyond it.
Apple provided the land and significant funding for the facility, creating an opportunity for TMFPD to establish a permanent presence near the Reno Technology Park. H+K Architects designed the station, and Plenium Builders provided CM-at-Risk services through preconstruction and construction.
Creating a Self-Sufficient Site
The location shaped the project from the ground up. Developing the site required significant grading and imported fill, along with infrastructure that would typically be available through nearby municipal systems.
A separate 1,400-square-foot pump house and 280,000-gallon water storage tank support site hydrants, the fire sprinkler system and the ability to fill apparatus. A dedicated water treatment system addresses naturally occurring arsenic in the well water. Together, these systems make the supporting infrastructure an important part of the facility itself.
Careful coordination among TMFPD, H+K Architects, PB and project partners kept those interconnected systems moving alongside construction of the station.
Ready for Changing Needs
Inside, the facility combines the spaces firefighters need for daily life with the operational areas required for emergency response. Three apparatus bays are supported by offices, kitchen and dining areas, crew rooms, a gym and specialized work areas.
Bi-fold apparatus bay doors add another operational feature. Designed to open quickly while reducing some of the maintenance concerns associated with traditional overhead doors, the system reflects the attention given to how firefighters will move through and use the building.
Flexibility was also built into the site and floor plan. The station can accommodate additional apparatus and staffing as needs change, while a separate building pad preserves space for a potential future wildland fuels facility.
Keeping Cost and Schedule on Track
A straightforward CMAR process helped the team maintain alignment from preconstruction through completion. With the program established and the design progressing as planned, the focus remained on coordination, cost control and execution rather than redesigning the project along the way.
Construction was completed within the adjusted contractual schedule and below the original construction contract value. That result gave TMFPD the facility it planned while maintaining responsible stewardship of the funding committed to the project.
Extending Regional Emergency Response
The station's location near I-80 was selected to improve TMFPD's reach into eastern Washoe County and strengthen mutual-aid capabilities with neighboring jurisdictions. The facility is positioned to support response to traffic incidents, brush fires and other emergencies along the interstate corridor, while providing capacity for future development in the surrounding area.
That long-term perspective is visible throughout the project, from the infrastructure beneath the site to the expansion opportunities incorporated into the building and grounds.
