A Vital Community Hub
Morning swim lessons, competitive training, and year-round recreation make the Carson Valley Swim Center a vibrant community resource and a place residents genuinely value. As participation grew, the existing entry, storage, and maintenance areas no longer supported operational demands. The challenge was clear: expand and modernize the facility without interrupting daily programming, compromising safety, or disrupting public access.
Strategic Structural Integration
A 2,500-square-foot east-side addition was carefully tied into the existing structure. Structural and building envelope connections required thoughtful sequencing to protect the integrity of the active natatorium while maintaining weather protection and life-safety systems. Mechanical, pool, and emergency power systems were coordinated and integrated without downtime, preserving operations from start to finish.
Phased Construction in an Active Environment
Because the Swim Center remained fully operational, construction progressed in deliberate phases. Access points were reconfigured, pedestrian flow was redirected, and safety controls were heightened to protect patrons of all ages. During winter construction, a temporary enclosed, well-lit tunnel provided safe, protected access to an alternate entrance, ensuring comfort and continuity despite seasonal weather challenges.
Performance, Durability, and Resilience
Energy performance and long-term durability guided the solution. Repositioned entrance doors stabilized interior temperatures and reduced HVAC strain. New concrete flooring with integrated drains improved sanitation and slip resistance. A two-car maintenance garage and climate-controlled workshop now protect district assets and extend equipment lifespan. A permanently installed generator strengthens facility resiliency, enabling continued operation during power outages and supporting County emergency functions when needed.
Coordinated Delivery
Structural tie-ins, live-environment sequencing, and system integration required disciplined coordination and proactive communication. Director Shannon Harris noted, “The Plenium project team navigated notable design and engineering challenges while maintaining a clear focus on functionality, safety, and long-term performance. Their ability to keep our facility fully operational throughout construction while delivering high-quality results reflects exceptional professionalism.”
The Eastside Expansion enhances efficiency, accessibility, and community resilience while allowing the Swim Center to continue serving the public without missing a day of programming.
