A Fresh Start for Reno’s First Responders
Walking through the doors of the Reno Public Safety Center, it’s easy to forget that this highly secure facility once hummed with the presses of a daily newspaper, the Reno-Gazette Journal. Now, the energy inside is focused on serving the community—housing everything from the Reno Police Department headquarters to victim advocacy and evidence services under one roof. This award-winning transformation is as much about vision as it is about grit, teamwork, and technical expertise.
Tackling Structural Challenges Head-On
Turning a former printing plant into a cutting-edge public safety hub meant grappling with a building shaped by its unique history. A massive three-story section, once home to the RGJ’s printing press, had to be removed entirely. That called for precision demolition, deep excavation, and new foundations before rebuilding could begin. Extensive seismic upgrades ensured the structure could support its new mission, bringing it up to essential public safety standards.
Phased Approach, Uninterrupted Progress
The journey unfolded in two major phases. First came the seismic work, reinforcing the bones of the building to withstand future earthquakes and serve as a true first responder asset. Next, the team shifted focus to the inside, installing advanced mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems tailored for police operations. Each new layer, from IT and evidence storage to custom millwork and security features, was designed to support those who protect and serve.
Smart, Resilient, and Sustainable
With an eye toward long-term community benefit, the team integrated backup generators and solar power, ensuring the building can remain fully operational during an emergency. Dispatch, communications, and security infrastructure received major upgrades, preparing the Center to respond to whatever the future holds.
Collaboration at Every Step
Throughout the project, close coordination between city stakeholders, public safety professionals, the design team, and construction partners ensured that every detail would support evolving needs. The process relied on expertise, creative problem-solving, and transparent communication, making the client and the community the true heroes of this transformation.
A Model for Adaptive Reuse
This multi-award-winning project demonstrates what’s possible when an aging landmark is given new life. The Reno Public Safety Center stands ready to support the city’s future, offering a secure, resilient, and efficient home for those who keep Reno safe.
