Nestled thoughtfully beside a main residence in Reno, NV, Logan’s Retreat is a shining example of how accessory dwelling units (ADUs) can create personalized, functional spaces for families with unique needs. This project was driven by the clients’ desire to provide their adult son, who benefits from additional daily support, with a space where he could enjoy independence while remaining close to the support of his family. Conventional housing solutions, such as rentals or nearby homes, fell short of their vision and were prohibitively expensive. Thus, they embarked on a journey to create a purpose-built home that perfectly catered to his requirements.

Thoughtful Design with Intentionality

Designed by architect Don Smit, based in Carson City, NV, the retreat combines ingenuity with intentionality. The home was dedicated to Smit during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a heartfelt acknowledgment of his role in bringing this vision to life. The process involved securing special permits and investing significant time in designing a space tailored to the family’s needs.

Breaking the Mold of Typical ADUs

The clients wanted to avoid the standard rectangular “box” ADU and collaborated closely with Schmidt to craft a distinctive footprint using unique, low-maintenance materials. Plenium Builders partnered with the architect and homeowners on final adjustments to the layout, providing constructability input on major accessibility features to maximize space. The exterior features a combination of Trex cladding and corrugated metal panels, resulting in a modern yet durable design that sets the retreat apart but still references the neighborhood's aesthetic. The structure, located in the rear yard of the property, was designed to fit within the required setbacks and height requirements for the region.

A Bright and Welcoming Interior

Inside, the ADU or "tiny home" maximizes functionality, comfort, and natural light. Large windows throughout the home provide an abundance of sunlight, while a door lite and additional windows facing the new connecting deck enhance connectivity with the main residence. The interior is painted bright white, creating a crisp, clean backdrop that complements the warm wood flooring. This choice, along with textured tiles, adds depth and interest to the space.

Expert Craftsmanship by Plenium Builders

Plenium Builders handled all rough and finish carpentry work, including deck building, cabinet installation, appliances, shelving, and more, ensuring every detail met the highest standards of craftsmanship. The kitchen is equipped with full-sized appliances and a floating breakfast bar that extends across both sides of a kitchen window, creating a dynamic and airy space for meals or socializing. The full-sized bathroom, though compact, makes excellent use of its footprint, featuring high-end fixtures, easy-to-maintain tiles, and a window that floods the space with natural light. A dedicated laundry room includes a 2-in-1 washer-dryer unit for convenience. The retreat also features a custom-built walk-in closet, a mini-split system for efficient heating and cooling, and a flexible living/sleeping area that adapts to daily activities.

Harmonious Integration with the Main Residence

The detached accessory dwelling is a single-story structure with a height just over 21 feet. The design aligns seamlessly with the primary structure, featuring complementary rooflines and building materials that blend harmoniously with the surrounding properties. The deck between the main house and the ADU fosters a sense of cohesion while ensuring the space supports autonomous living.

A Testament to Thoughtful Design

Logan’s Retreat is more than just a home; it’s a testament to how design can address specific needs while maintaining a sense of style and innovation. By prioritizing independence and comfort, the project showcases how tiny homes can serve as meaningful extensions of family living.
