Every detail matters when designing for scientific precision. For HORIBA, a global manufacturer of advanced analytical and measurement systems, that meant transforming a tilt-up concrete structure in Reno into a high-performing research and development facility for their semiconductor and scientific divisions.
From the beginning, HORIBA’s team brought forward a clear vision: a flexible, comfortable workspace paired with highly controlled environments. Over the past several years, Plenium Builders has partnered with them through more than $10 million in design-build work across multiple facilities in Northern Nevada.
The initial project focused on office and warehouse modifications, reconfiguring the layout, upgrading finishes, and improving system performance to meet HORIBA’s operational needs. That foundation paved the way for several phases of complex laboratory and cleanroom expansions. These tightly controlled environments support the development and testing of HORIBA’s particle counters, chemical concentration monitors, and other semiconductor instrumentation.
Each scope was delivered design-build, with PB and the design team working hand-in-hand with HORIBA’s engineers to interpret technical requirements and translate them into integrated construction solutions. The team delivered ISO-classified labs, process HVAC, custom tool hookups, gas and chemical distribution, process chill water systems, and internal mezzanine additions—all built to perform without compromising existing operations.
Beyond the main facility, PB supported HORIBA’s regional operations with improvements to utility infrastructure, security systems, facility tie-ins, and equipment installations at several satellite locations. The team also provided due diligence for land acquisition and has begun preconstruction for the next phase of expansion.
This long-term partnership has been defined by responsiveness, technical collaboration, and the ability to adapt to evolving needs. Together, HORIBA and Plenium Builders have created a uniquely capable environment where innovation can advance.
In a second phase, PB built out state-of-the-art clean rooms and customized, tightly controlled laboratory environments for the development and testing of their analytical and measuring systems used in the semi-conductor manufacturing industry. The design-build team took the extensive criteria provided by Horiba engineers and implemented it into a one-of-a-kind facility. This phase also included a mezzanine of the lab with additional office space, training, and conference room.
